The successful candidate will work individually as well as with their peers to meet office needs as a whole.

General Description:
This is a paraprofessional position.
The incumbent performs routine tasks to provide skilled administrative support to attorneys and/or judges.
Organization:
The Legal Assistant is part of Hanover County's Career Development Program (CD).
The Legal Assistant Ladder has four levels ranging from Legal Assistant I to Senior Legal Assistant.
Incumbents usually report to an Attorney or a Judge and supervise no staff.
However, Senior Legal Assistants may serve as workflow leaders to lower level Legal Assistants.
Essential Functions:
functions may vary depending on Career Development levelo Prepares, organizes, maintains and indexes all misdemeanor and felony criminal files.
o Drafts routine correspondence, indictments, motions and pleadings.
o Coordinates with court and attorneys for docket preparation and case management.
o Reviews pleadings and other correspondence and identifies applicable timelines.
o Schedules hearings, including issuance of notices and subpoenas.
o Conducts legal and factual research and prepares memoranda to attorney summarizing search results.
o Provides general office support services that includes organizing case files with police reports, records, all evidence documents required and prior charges of defendant.
o Performs other department specific functions as assigned, including running criminal records and notary public.
o Performs related work as assigned.

Non-exempt Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be computer proficient and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Ability to organize and prioritize to meet deadlines, required.
Knowledge of the court system along with the principles and practices of traffic and criminal law preferred.
Effective oral and written communication skills, required.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, court personnel, County employees and public, required.
Education, Experience and Training:
High school diploma or equivalent required and paralegal certification through NALA (Certified Legal Assistant/Certified Paralegal) or NFPA (Registered Paralegal) preferred - OR - Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.
Higher levels on the Career Ladder require certifications and/or additional education up to a Bachelor's degree.
Related experience desired as follows:
2 years @ level I, 3 years @ level II, 5 years @ level III, and 7 years @ the Senior level.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
